What is Amazon’s new cloud gaming service?
Amazon’s new cloud gaming service, Amazon Luna, is powered by the Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure. Consumers may use it to stream games from a variety of platforms to a number of devices, similar to other cloud gaming systems. It eliminates the need for downloads, updates, and even local storage but does require a fast internet connection.
Luna, like Microsoft’s Xbox Cloud Gaming platform, offers a Netflix-of-games-style game library under the Luna Plus monthly subscription. It also has Amazon Prime Video-style add-on channels that unlock additional material from a certain creator for an extra monthly fee. There are currently five premium channels to discover.
Although Amazon Luna does not need any specific equipment, the company has introduced a dedicated controller for the service. It has a built-in Wi-Fi receiver to eliminate the middleman and reduce input latency, much like Google Stadia controllers. It’s an important investment if a few milliseconds can make or break your online game.
Luna Cloud Gaming Services is unique in that it offers a sort of couch co-op experience in the cloud known as Luna Couch. Non-paying players may join their game and play along as long as the host is a paying subscriber.
It’s new, cool but is it worth it?
It’s difficult to tell whether or not Amazon Luna is worth it at this point since it just debuted. While Amazon Luna does appear to be an appealing option in comparison to Xbox Cloud Gaming or Google Stadia, there are still a lot of unanswered questions that may worry gamers.
The most significant of these is price. While the service is presently well worth the low $5.99 price tag, Amazon has made it clear that this rate will only be available to those who join up for the March launch month. The cost will almost double on April 1st if you belong to Amazon Prime (about a 30% increase).
The service does, in fact, function similarly to its competitors. Casual gamers with a decent internet connection may not be aware that they aren’t playing on a local machine (at least until the connection momentarily stutters). In terms of delivering value, Amazon’s massive AWS infrastructure has been very beneficial.
