Apple has discontinued the iPod more than two decades after the technology was initially introduced, according to a press release issued Tuesday. flashback: the iPod was introduced in October 2001 and became a popular cultural phenomenon that would go on to revolutionize portable music. In 2019, Apple unveiled the latest version of its iPod touch.

According to Ina Fried, a writer for Axios: “The iPod had lost traction as a product when smartphones took off and the iPod touch was left without updates in recent years.” However, the technology was also an entry point to iOS for children who were too young to get an iPhone.

The facts drove the news: “Today, iPod’s spirit lives on,” Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing Greg Joswiak said in a statement.

“The company said it will continue to offer the iPod Touch for as long as supplies last, per CEO John Browett.

The first iPod touch was launched in 2007, and it became an instant success among consumers who wanted the iPhone form factor but without mobile capabilities. For years, the device had regular upgrades, but when the iPhone grew more popular, Apple’s attention shifted.

The current seventh-generation iPod touch was launched in 2019. It’s equipped with an A10 Fusion processor, which was first used in the iPhone 7. It has a 4-inch screen and comes in a variety of colors. However, the iPod touch will be discontinued this year.
