Wordle hints (game #785) – clue #1 – Vowels

• Wordle today has a vowel in one place*.
* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).
Wordle hints (game #785) – clue #2 – first letter
What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?
• The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is W.
W is a fairly average letter when it comes to starting an answer. There are 82 solutions that begin with a W, with means that it ranks 13th – so right in the middle of the alphabet.
Wordle hints (game #785) – clue #3 – repeated letters
Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?
• There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #785)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #785) is… WRATH.
WRATH might well describe my emotion on solving today’s puzzle, because this was another frustrating game for me. In fact, it was a fifth 4/6 in a row, following two 5/6s before that – a far cry from the period just before that, when I scored three 2/6s in eight days.
Anyway, WRATH only has an average score of 3.3, according to WordleBot, which is incredibly low. I’m a little surprised by that; WRATH doesn’t strike me as an easy word to guess, although maybe I’m just saying that because I didn’t get a great score.
That said, there is a simple reason why the score is so low – SLATE, arguably the best Wordle starting word, left just one possible solution today. And it wasn’t the only one to narrow things down greatly; CRATE was also at one, as was CARTE, while TRACE left only four.
My pick, STARE, left just 12, which is pretty low in its own right, but it somehow took me another three guesses from there. I don’t feel like I did anything major wrong: GLINT, my second attempt, was a pretty good effort which WordleBot rated at 88/99 and which narrowed down my options to three.
I identified those three – TRACK, TRAMP and WRATH – reasonably quickly, and (I think) sensibly went with one of the TRA– words, TRACK. That was wrong, though, leaving me to play WRATH fourth time out. Hopefully my luck will change soon.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #784)
In a different time zone where it’s still Saturday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #784, too.
- Wordle yesterday had vowels in two places.
- The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was Q.
- There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was K.
- Yesterday’s Wordle answer is speedy.
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #784)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #784) was… QUICK.
To look at it, you might think that today’s Wordle word would be a very difficult one to uncover. After all, it starts with a Q – the second least common of all letters in the game, ahead of only J. Plus, it contains a K – only 20th in terms of appearances.
However, a couple of factors make it a little easier than you might think, to the extent that it’s average score, according to WordleBot, is just 3.9 – placing it below the likes of HELLO, BULLY, BROOK and LOVER among recent games.
One of those factors is that Q is not quite so uncommon at the start of a word as it is elsewhere; it’s 21st in this regard. Another is that K is actually quite common at the end, where it’s the ninth most likely letter.
But a bigger factor is that there aren’t many other words that have a similar format. If you established that C goes in position #4, for instance, you’d know that it would likely be followed by a K, H or Y. If you discovered the U in position #2, a Q before it is always a possibility. Plus, QUICK is itself a very common word.
I started, as always, with one of the best Wordle starting words – in my case, STARE. This was no help at all today, giving me five gray letters and 319 possible solutions. I followed, as always in this scenario, with CLOUD – and here I had some luck. The C and U turned yellow, giving me a few ideas about what the answer could be.
WordleBot said there were nine words left, and I found six of them: MUNCH, HUNCH, BUNCH, PUNCH, YUCKY and MUCKY. With that in mind, I played PUNCH, figuring that it would at least tell me which of those formats to persevere with.
As WordleBot told me afterwards – and as I knew right away – I’d made a mistake here; it would have made a lot more sense to have played another narrowing down word, for instance the ‘Bot’s suggestion of IMPLY. If the answer had been HUNCH, BUNCH, or MUNCH, I’d still have had only a 1/3 chance of getting a 4/6 and could have ended up with a 6/6.
Still, I got away with it. The U and C both turned green, but the H didn’t – which meant I must have missed some possible answers. Another search led me to two options, QUICK and JUICY. I couldn’t see any others, so figured a 5/6 was the worst I’d score. With no reason to choose one over the other, I went with QUICK simply because it seemed a more likely answer, and was rewarded with a 4/6.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
