New Hulu movies: the best films to stream in September 2023
These are our six top picks of all the new Hulu movies you can watch on the streaming service this September:
Chronicle
Release date: September 1
Chronicle is a sci-fi movie filmed unconventionally in a found footage style. It’s about a group of high school friends who develop superpowers and telekinetic abilities after discovering a mysterious object.
However, this isn’t your run-of-the-mill superhero story. It deals with the psychological impact of gaining these unexpected powers, the conflicts and struggles that arise when they try to harness them and the emotional journeys they go on throughout.
If you like superhero movies but want to see a fresh take on the genre, Chronicle is a must watch. It’s a smart and enjoyable watch, and the performances are solid here, too, with Dane DeHaan (Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets), Alex Russell and Michael B. Jordan (Creed 3) playing the trio of super-friends.
The Lego Movie
Release date: September 1
If you’re looking for a fun watch for the family, get The Lego Movie on your must-watch list. This funny, creative and heartfelt film is set in a world made of Lego bricks and follows the story of Emmet, an ordinary construction worker who becomes the key to saving the world from an evil villain.
There’s witty dialogue, beautiful and vibrant visuals and an excellent cast of Lego characters, including many voices you’ll recognize. There’s also a self-conscious meta-narrative throughout that adults will appreciate. The Lego Movie is a delightful watch, so we guarantee it’s one of those rare gems that’s universally enjoyable and will appeal to all ages.
Seven
Release date: September 1
One of the best crime thrillers of all time, Seven is also easily one of our favorite David Fincher films, delving into the dark depths of human nature. Be warned, this movie is filled with several horrifying moments you simply cannot unsee.
It follows the story of two detectives, David Mills (played by Brad Pitt) and William Somerset (Morgan Freeman), who are investigating a series of gruesome murders that they soon realize are based on the seven deadly sins. As they start to unravel the disturbing puzzle, the film explores the psychological toll this shocking case has on the pair.
This isn’t an easy watch, but it’s a phenomenal film with intense performances from the cast, atmospheric cinematography and an unrelenting sense of dread and tension that’ll stick with you long after the credits have rolled. If you’re a Fincher fan, we highly recommend our guide to every David Fincher movie rated from worst to best.
The Banshees of Inisherin
Release date: September 4
The Banshees of Inisherin is another fantastic watch from award-winning director Martin McDonagh (In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri). It’s set on a fictional island off the west coast of Ireland in the 1920s and follows the story of Pádraic (played by Colin Farrell), who is devastated when his friend Colm (Brendan Gleeson) suddenly calls time on their friendship. Pádraic enlists the help of his sister and a young islander to fix their relationship, but Colm refuses to back down.
The Banshees of Inisherin is an outstanding dark comedy filled with surprising moments of humor, tension, and violence. If you’re looking for a refreshing watch that defies genre in many ways – and features outstanding performances from Farrell and Gleeson – then this is a fantastic film.
Mad Max: Fury Road
Release date: September 9
If you enjoy big, cinematic films that look simply stunning, then you will enjoy Mad Max: Fury Road. Directed by George Miller (Mad Max, Happy Feet), this is a post-apocalyptic adventure, and it’s best to think of it as a sort of reboot of the original movie.
It follows the story of Max Rockatansky (played by Tom Hardy) and Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron), who embark on a daring escape from a terrifying and tyrannical warlord. Expect breathtaking stunts, relentless action sequences and some of the best world-building we’ve ever had the chance to soak up. We particularly love Theron’s character of Furiosa and the feminist undertones of this masterpiece of a movie.
The Accountant
Release date: September 28
If you’re in the mood for a well-paced thriller, then get The Accountant on your must-watch list. It follows the story of Christian Wolff (played by Ben Affleck), an autistic accountant who helps criminal clients launder their money. However, he takes on a client that gets him tangled up in a dangerous web of corruption and violence.
The Accountant brings a fresh perspective on the typical action hero movie and Affleck is great in the lead role. There’s also a strong supporting cast here, including Anna Kendrick and J.K. Simmons. It may not be the best movie you’ll watch this year, but it’s certainly a fun watch that has big franchise potential – there are rumors that a sequel is in the works.
